About Melissa

I have been fascinated with the visual arts since I first immigrated from Mexico to the United States when I was 3. From there, I picked up English through diffusion by reading picture books and watching animated movies and shows. My newfound American background, along with my Mexican heritage, influenced my work and guided my artistic direction. In high school, I was chosen for San Jose Downtown Doors, a city-wide art contest where my work, along with eleven others, was chosen for display in downtown San Jose for two years. I am now an avid participant in the art world, having graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art. I emphasized my studies on illustration and animation, while also exploring more contemporary mediums such as kinetic sculpture and digital fabrication.

The subjects that I value are my thoughts and feelings as well as those of others. By learning about the past, present, and future, I get to learn what makes me different, and what makes us the same. My influences for creating art are linked to the indigenous cultures of America, where the artist is linked to their community. The role of the artist was to evoke a response from the audience by portraying the collective thoughts and feelings of their community. While the definition of “art” is boundless, I define my own art on how it can relate it to others. Creating, for yourself and for others, is a balance of self-expression and self-sacrifice. What further influences my creative process is the visual portrayal of a movement instead of an image. The energy of a subject can be channeled through my understanding of three dimensional forms in a two dimensional space. Through characters, settings, and objects, I encapsulate a mood by being mindful of the balance between heavy and light, fast and slow, sound and silence. It is my attention to detail, observance, and focus that makes it possible to bring subjects to life.

Having done my fair share of moving, I am living in Houston, TX at the moment. I am currently working on some character designs for a couple of animated shorts, one having to do with my dog Pepper. I am an avid visitor of Houston’s local museums, as well as those in Texas’s other major cities like Austin and San Antonio. I immerse myself in these local art scenes, and I reach out to artistic institutions whenever the chance arises.
